How do platypuses give birth?

Platypuses, unique to Eastern Australia and Tasmania, exhibit exceptional reproductive characteristics. Unlike most mammals, platypuses lay leathery, parchment-like eggs! This reproductive strategy places them in a distinct group of animals known as monotremes.

Here's how platypuses give birth:

Egg Laying:

1. Mating and Fertilization: During mating season, which occurs between June and October in the Southern Hemisphere, male platypuses compete for mates. The males possess venomous spurs on their hind feet, which they use primarily during the breeding season. After mating, the female retreats to her nesting chamber.

2. Building a Nest: The female platypus constructs a nesting burrow along the riverbank, which can extend up to 20 meters (65 feet) long. The burrow provides protection and a safe environment for laying eggs and raising the young.

3. Laying Eggs: Approximately 2 weeks after mating, the female lays one or two oval-shaped, leathery eggs inside her burrow. Platypus eggs are small, about the size of a large grape.

2. Feeding: The mother platypus nurses her puggles for several months. During this time, the puggles grow rapidly, developing fur, opening their eyes, and learning to swim and forage.

3. Weaning: Eventually, the puggles are weaned and start hunting for their own food. They become independent and leave the nesting burrow to explore their surroundings.
