Gerbils are active, burrowing rodents that need plenty of space to run and dig. The Alexander small pet cage is too small for gerbils, and it does not provide enough space for them to exercise. Additionally, the cage is made of wire, which can be harmful to gerbils if they chew on it.
Gerbils should be housed in a cage that is at least 24 inches long, 12 inches wide, and 12 inches tall. The cage should have a solid bottom and plenty of bedding for digging. Gerbils also need access to a variety of toys and chews to keep them entertained.
