Gerbils are known for having long, highly sensitive whiskers that they use to explore their environment and navigate through their burrows. The number of whiskers on a gerbil can vary depending on the individual and its age, but on average, a gerbil has around 24 whiskers on each side of its face, for a total of approximately 48 whiskers. These whiskers are arranged in five or six rows and can measure up to several inches in length.
