Important Notes:
* Never clean the entire cage immediately after the babies are born. The mother needs the familiar scent of the babies and their bedding to help her bond with them.
* Always use pet-safe cleaning products. Avoid harsh chemicals like bleach or ammonia, which can be toxic to guinea pigs.
Cleaning Steps:
1. Separate the mother and babies. If you have a large enough cage, you can put them in separate sections. Otherwise, put the babies in a temporary enclosure, like a plastic tote lined with bedding.
2. Remove soiled bedding and replace it with fresh bedding. You can use a small amount of the old bedding in the new cage to help maintain the familiar scent.
3. Spot clean the cage. Wipe down the cage walls, floor, and any accessories with a pet-safe cleaner and a damp cloth.
4. Refill food and water bowls. Make sure the water bottle is clean and filled with fresh water.
5. Return the babies to their mother. They can stay with their mother for about 3-4 weeks before being separated.
Additional Tips:
* Clean the cage more frequently while the babies are young. They are more prone to illness and need a clean environment.
* Provide plenty of fresh hay and vegetables for the mother and babies. They need extra nutrition to support their growth.
* Monitor the babies closely for any signs of illness. Look for lethargy, loss of appetite, diarrhea, or any unusual behavior.
If you have any concerns about the health of your guinea pigs, consult with a veterinarian.
