Guinea Pig Cage Ideas

Guinea pigs make great family pets. Their personable nature and happy whistles quickly make them a member of the family. Since guinea pigs usually end up in a community living space, such a TV room, family room or playroom, the cage should also be pleasant to view. With several styles of cages, accessories and toys for guinea pigs on the market, it is easy to make their home complement your own.
  1. Styles of Cages

    • In larger pet retail stores, it is easy to find a variety of colorful guinea pig cages Gone are the days of standard metal-wire enclosures. Now, it is easy to find plastic base cages with wire tops. From purple, tan, teal and yellow, it is easy to find a bright colored cage that will complement the room where your guinea pig will live.

If you plan to move your guinea pig from room to room, consider a cage on casters. Elevated cages on casters are great for homes with dogs, so the guinea pig is above dog-viewing height.

    Accessories

    • Standard built-in or "all-in-one" packaged accessories in modern guinea pig cages are racks for hay and alfalfa, large water bottles, hiding boxes and gentle sloping ramps for access to a ledge.

Additional accessories that guinea pigs enjoy include cave style hiding places, heavy ceramic food bowls that won't easily tip over, treat bowls and toy bins. A second hay rack works well for easy access to stored toys.

    Toys

    • Guinea pigs love to play by tossing, chewing and rooting their noses under toys to move them around. Plan to place toys around your guinea pigs cage to help fight boredom during times of inactivity with the family.

Large pet stores offer natural woven sissel ball, with a jingle bell hidden inside that guinea pigs love to toss and hear jingle. Hanging bird toys from the side of a guinea pigs cage can also be entertaining. Rawhide, bells, wood and straw-based bird toys are a great complement to your guinea pig cage.

Guinea pigs love to chew. Look for tube style wooden, rawhide or cardboard toys that are filled with alfalfa. The pigs will work to pull out the green treat.
