How to Prevent Malocclusion in Guinea Pigs

Malocclusion typically occurs in older guinea pigs from two to three years of age. Malocclusion involves the misalignment of the upper and lover premolar teeth. While trauma can contribute to the development of malocclusion, in most instances, a lack of vitamin C causes this disease. Prevention of this disease can help avoid clipping or in extreme cases, extractions of your guinea pig's teeth.

Consider the type of hay you offer your guinea pig. Fresh hay can help wear down your pet's teeth and prevent overgrowth. Hay cubes might not be fibrous enough. PetPlace suggests using stem hay.
