How to Feed Pigs Tomatoes

Pigs are omnivores and will eat nearly anything you put in front of them. For optimum health, feed your pig a balanced diet, including specially formulated pig feed that contains a maximum of 14 percent protein. Pigs also eat fruits and vegetables, such as tomatoes. Feed your pig tomatoes as an occasional treat; tomatoes should not comprise a significant portion of its diet. The exact amount of food to feed your pig will vary, depending on the pig. Regular potbellied pigs will eat more than miniature teacup pigs. Ask your veterinarian for specific feeding guidelines.

Instructions

    • 1

Select fully ripened tomatoes to feed your pig. Never feed a pig a green tomato or any other part of the tomato plant, because these are toxic to pigs.

    • 2

Wash the tomato in running water to remove any pesticides. Dry it with a paper towel.

    • 3

Slice the tomato in half if you have a miniature pig or a very young pig.

    • 4

Offer your pig the tomato with its breakfast or dinner. Do not restrict the pig to solely eating tomatoes along with its specially formulated pig pellets. He should also eat an abundance of iceberg lettuce and other leafy vegetables, along with lesser amounts of starchy vegetables, like potatoes and peas.

    • 5

Include tomatoes in your pig's diet in moderation only. The high acidity of tomatoes may cause urinary tract infections if given in large amounts.

    • 6

Offer your pig a total of 1 cup of fresh vegetables and fruits per feeding, unless otherwise instructed by your veterinarian.
