How to Tell a Male Guinea From a Female Guinea

You have taken the plunge and purchased a guinea pig as your family pet. Now you want to know if you should name your pet Ralph or Ruthie. Determining the sex of a guinea pig is a fairly simple process. You may want to learn this process before purchasing a guinea pig because these animals can become impregnated while still very young. If you buy a female pet you may be surprised to have more than one once it has settled into your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Calm your pet by holding it softly in your hand and speaking in a hushed tone.

    • 2

Cup the guinea pig in your hand with its back settled into the palm.

    • 3

Gently spread the hind legs apart and view the animal's genital area.

    • 4

You will be looking for a small Y shaped area.

    • 5

Tap your index finger right above the Y shaped area.

    • 6

After you tap you will notice that the Y shaped area will open slightly.

    • 7

If a small bump protrudes from this opening then you have a male guinea pig. If you notice a small area of smooth skin in the opening then your pet is a female guinea pig.

After following these steps you can go ahead and decide on a proper name for your pet.
