Instructions

    • 1

Search for a piece of furniture that matches your décor. Depending on the amount of room you have for the piece and the size cage you want for your guinea pig, the piece will vary. You could use an end table with a door, an entertainment center or a boxed-in coffee table. Look at thrift stores and garage sales for an inexpensive model. Regardless of what you choose, look for a piece that has five closed-in sides and a hinged door.

Use a jigsaw to cut a hole in the door of the piece of furniture you chose. Leave a minimum of 1 inch all around the door. Discard the cut-out piece. Sand the cut area with medium-grit sandpaper to smooth the edges.

    • 3

Cut a piece of wire mesh cloth to fit the entire opening you cut out in the prior step. Use a staple gun to attach the mesh to the back of the door. When choosing mesh, chose a medium-size mesh. You want to ensure the holes are large enough for the guinea pig to breathe.

Use a drill with a 1/4-inch drill bit to make small holes all over the sides and back of the piece of furniture. These holes are for ventilation. Place approximately 10 holes in all.

    • 5

Line the bottom of the piece of furniture with a piece of plastic tarp. Cut the tarp to match the measurements of the bottom of the furniture. Use a staple gun to attach it in place. This will protect the wood from damage due to urine and feces. It also makes it easier to clean up the cage since you can just wipe it down with a wet sponge.

Spread your bedding of choice in the bottom of your completed cage. Place any accessories in the cage as well as the food and water bowls. Add your guinea pig and close the door to keep it in.
