Provide your guinea pig with only fresh food and water each day. By leaving food or water in the cage for several days, you are providing a prime place for bacteria to grow. When the guinea pig ingests spoiled food or water, it is possible for the bacteria to begin to grow within the bladder and cause a urinary tract infection.

Keep your guinea pig's cage clean and dry. Change the bedding at least once a week---the smaller the cage, the more often bedding should be changed. It is important to keep the cage dry because wet conditions are great for bacteria. Hanging water bottles are much better than dishes because they prevent spilling and sloshing.

Offer your guinea pig unsweetened cranberry juice diluted with water, or yogurt, a few times a week. (The juice is quite bitter and diluting it with water makes it more palatable.) Although your guinea pig may choose not to consume these foods, it's important to try. They can help keep your guinea pig's urinary tract clean and free of bacteria.

Look into getting a cage that has grid-patterned flooring, allowing urine to drain into the tray beneath the cage. This will keep your pet's feet and bedding drier and cleaner.
