How to Control Odor in a Guinea Pig Cage

Guinea pigs, often called cavies by pet-owners, make excellent additions to any family. These animals, once they adapt to the presence of humans, become affectionate and loving. Because of their generally docile demeanor, guinea pigs are often a favorite pet of children. It is important to remember, however, that these rodents need a certain level of care to maintain their hygiene and prevent cage odors. Routinely cleaning and maintaining their home environment will ensure a relatively odor-free cavy.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove your guinea pig from its enclosure, and place it somewhere secure where it cannot escape.

    • 2

Sweep bedding and leftover food into a dustpan using a handheld broom. Dispose of the waste immediately.

    • 3

Scrub the bottom of the enclosure well with a solution of one part vinegar and three parts water, and dry it thoroughly with a clean towel.

    • 4

Dust the bottom of the enclosure with a small amount of baking soda to absorb any odors that might sink through the bedding.

    • 5

Line the bottom of the guinea pig enclosure with a safe bedding like shredded newspaper, grass hay or hardwood shavings. Avoid cedar or pine shavings as these are potentially toxic to guinea pigs.

    • 6

Repeat the entire procedure at least once a week as needed to ensure that no odor or waste builds up in your guinea pig's cage.
