> The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a registered dog breed of southern Africa. It is a medium to large-sized hound dog with a short coat and a distinctive double-ridged crest of hair along its spine that runs in the opposite direction of the rest of its coat, the hallmark of the breed.

- Appearance: Muscular and well-balanced, short and dense coat with a distinctive reddish to wheaten color, prominent ridge that runs along the spine in the opposite direction of the rest of the coat.
- Temperament: Loyal, intelligent, protective, confident, and independent, but also affectionate with its family. Known for its courage and loyalty, they make excellent guard dogs.
- Size: Males stand 25 to 27 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh 70 to 85 pounds, while females are 24 to 26 inches tall and weigh 60 to 70 pounds.
- Lifespan: 10 to 12 years
- Health: Prone to certain health conditions such as hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and certain eye diseases, regular check-ups are important.
- Activity Level: Relatively active, needs daily exercise and mental stimulation to stay healthy and well-behaved.

History and Use:
- Origin: Developed in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) during the 19th century by European settlers who crossed European dogs with local African dogs.
- Primary Use: Historically used for big game hunting, especially in the pursuit of lions, as well as protection against predators and guarding property and livestock.
- Nowadays, they are primarily kept as family dogs, companions, and show dogs, but some are still used for hunting.
