Research all you can about hamsters. You can check out books about hamsters from a local library or purchase books on hamster care from a pet store. The Internet can also be a valuable resource for finding information about owning a hamster. Learn about a hamster's diet, how much space it requires, how much attention it needs, proper cage cleanliness and veterinarian care. Ask yourself if you are ready to take on the responsibilities of owning a hamster before you approach your dad.
Prove to your dad that you are responsible enough to own a hamster. Keep your room clean. Do your chores and homework without being asked or reminded to. Avoid arguing with your siblings if you have them. Take on extra responsibilities if you have a chance; volunteer to do the dishes even though it's not your turn, or take initiative and clean up after another family member or sibling.
Save your allowance or get a part time job, if you are old enough. Delivering newspapers and helping neighbors or family members with yard work, errands or household chores can all earn you a little extra income. You will need money to provide food, bedding and veterinarian care for your hamster. If you can provide for your hamster yourself, your dad will be more willing to allow you to have one.
Ask your dad nicely for a hamster. Don't beg or demand, and don't cry or throw a tantrum if he says no at first. Show your dad the research you've gathered about hamsters, demonstrate that you can afford to provide for your hamster, and remind him that you have been responsible with your chores and homework. He will be impressed by the amount of work effort you have shown and might reconsider his decision.
Don't be discouraged if your dad says no. Keep acting responsibly and save your money. If you prove that your good behavior is a permanent thing, rather than just a ploy to get him to allow you to have a hamster, he may reconsider. Don't be afraid to ask him again after a few weeks or months have passed. Don't pester him every day about it, but remind him that you would really like a hamster.
How to Talk Your Dad Into Buying a Hamster
Hamsters are cute, sociable animals that can make wonderful companions. Convincing your dad to buy you a hamster, however, may take more than simply asking him. Owning a hamster is a big responsibility, which is why many adults are reluctant to take that step. In order to own a hamster, you must be prepared to care for another living creature for the rest of its life. The responsibility of owning and caring for a hamster can be challenging, but the rewards of having a playful companion are undeniable.
