When Do I Clean a Teddy Bear Hamster's Cage?

Teddy bear hamsters are one of the cutest pets for young children and easy to care for. They are friendly, entertaining and inexpensive to keep. These animals are similar to regular hamsters, but they have longer fur, which can grow an average of 1 or 2 inches long. They were named after the teddy bear for their long fur.

Put on latex gloves before you start cleaning. Remove the bottom tray of the cage and empty the old litter in the trash. Save a handful of the old litter to put in the clean cage so the hamster smells a familiar odor. Use a scrub brush to scrape the tray to loosen the urine and feces before you wash it with a cloth and mild detergent like dish soap. Rinse and dry the tray thoroughly. Wipe the bars with soapy water and be sure to scrub urine stains off completely. Dry all parts before you reassemble the cage and add fresh litter. Complete cleaning of the cage should be performed once a week.

Wash the water bowl or water bottle, dry food bowl, accessories, toys and housing unit in soapy water. Rinse and thoroughly dry all items. Clean these items twice a week.

Remove unconsumed vegetables and fruits daily before offering your pet fresh foods. Never leave old food in the cage that will spoil. Seeds and grains can be left in the dry food bowl for up to a week and filled every day until you do a complete cleaning once a week.
