How to Coax a Hamster Out of Hiding

Hamsters are lively and social rodents, well-suited to novice and experienced pet owners alike. Available in numerous sizes and colors, the hamster is relatively inexpensive to purchase and care for. Although hamsters are easily tamed to become friendly companions, their nature is to hide from time to time, either inside their cage or loose in your home if they escape from their cage.

Make the room the hamster is inside comfortable and safe for the hamster. Remove any additional pets and ask other humans to leave, as their presence may further frighten the hamster. Eliminate any noises that may frighten the hamster. Speak in a soothing, kind voice to help your hamster understand that it is safe.

Place a dish of your hamster's favorite foods and treats where the hamster can see it. Whether your hamster is inside or outside of its cage, hunger is often good motivation for it to come out for a bit. Make sure the food is also in a location the hamster views as secure and safe.

Add a new hamster hideout to the area where your hamster is hiding. This new hideout may pique your hamster's curiosity or provide a hiding place that your hamster sees as more safe and suitable. Once your hamster begins to investigate or hide inside the new hideout, you can retrieve it for play or to return it to its cage.
