How to Separate Male & Female Hamsters

Hamsters are small rodents with short tails that come in a number of different colors. While hamsters enjoy living with one another, it is important to keep your male and female hamsters separate if you do not want to care for a large broad of rodents. If housed together, male and female hamsters will likely breed and give birth to six to eight pups on average. The only way to prevent your hamsters from breeding is to separate them into two separate living habitats.

Flip your hamster over gently in your hands so that the hamster's belly is facing you.

    • 2

Look at the rear of your hamster for two bulges in between the hind legs. These bulges are the male hamsters testicles. If present, you most definitely have a male hamster.

    • 3

Look closely at the spacing between the hamsters anus and second opening. Female hamsters' anus and vaginal opening are spaced very closely together while male hamsters have a noticeably larger space between their anus and penis.

Place your male hamsters into one cage and your female hamsters into the second cage.
