How to Make a Hamster Playhouse

While hamsters are only small, they love to run around, be active and play with things, especially playhouses. You can buy one from a pet store; however, they can be costly, large and unnecessary. You can easily create a cheaper place for your hamster to play using old household objects such as a tissue box or a coconut.

Things You'll Need

  • Coconut
  • Drill
  • Miniature hole saw (1-2 inches in diameter)
  • Spoon
  • Empty tissue box
  • Razor knife
  • Sellotape
  • 2 cardboard tubes

Instructions

  1. Coconut Play House

    • 1

Drain the milk from the coconut. All coconuts have 3 black spots on the surface either at the top or the bottom. Drill 3 holes in the black spots, as this is the weakest point of a coconut. Tip the coconut upside down and allow all the liquid to drain.

    • 2

Drill 3 holes into the coconut. The first should be in the position of the original 3 holes you made. The second and third can be anywhere you choose but it is a good idea to space them out so your hamster can use them as separate doors.

    • 3

Scrape out all the coconut fruit using a spoon. This should be fairly easy if the holes you made are big enough. You should be left with an empty shell.

    • 4

Dry the shell out on a radiator over night. Once dry, your hamster playhouse is complete. You hamster will be able to enter the coconut and roll around inside it.

    Tissue Box Play House

    • 5

Turn the tissue box on its side so that the face with the hole is on the side of the box, not at the top.

    • 6

Cut 2 additional holes on either side of the box using the razor knife. The holes need to be the same size as your cardboard tubes.

    • 7

Push the cardboard tubes into the holes you have made. You should now have two tubes sticking out of either side of the box and the original hole on the face of the box.

    • 8

Secure both tubes with Sellotape if they are at all loose.

    • 9

Place the box into the hamster's cage. Your hamster will love crawling into the small spaces and exploring its new playhouse.
