Things You'll Need
- Pencil/eraser
Instructions
Wash your hands to remove the scent of food if you have eaten. Your hamster may bite you if your fingers smell like food.
Stroke your hamster gently with the eraser end of a pencil. This will help it to get used to being touched. Watch how the hamster responds to the pencil. Once the hamster gets used to being stroked with it you can move on to introducing your hands into your hamster's cage.
Place a small cube of apple in the center of your palm and place your hand on the floor of the cage to encourage your pet to step onto it. Allow the hamster to take the treat and step off your hand. Repeat this exercise on a daily basis for three days.
Scoop your hamster up carefully with your hand underneath when it walks onto your hand. Place your other hand over the top of the hamster to keep it from falling. Bring the hamster out of its cage but avoid holding it high up off the ground as it could be severely injured if it falls. If your hamster does bite you, do not drop it. Instead place it back in its cage. Handle your hamster every day to help it to become tame and enjoy being handled.
