How to Recycle a Paper Towel for Hamster Bedding

Recycling a paper towel for hamster bedding is an inexpensive way to maintain a hamster cage. You can provide your hamster with a soft surface to nest, burrow, sleep and play upon while also applying the eco-conscious practice of recycling. Paper towel bedding is not as absorbent as other materials; however, it does provide a delicate material for hamsters to chew. Paper towels that do not contain chemicals or dyes are safe for hamsters.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the hamster in a separate cage from its permanent home. Remove and discard most of the old bedding from the hamster cage, keeping a small amount to mix with the new bedding so the hamster recognizes its scent. Wipe down the cage with a hamster-safe disinfectant from your local pet store.

Fit a paper shredder over a clean waste basket. Plug the paper shredder cord into and electrical socket and press the power button to turn it on. Feed the paper towel into the opening to shred it into small pieces.

    • 3

Remove the shredded pieces of paper towel from the waste basket. Spread the shreds evenly on the bottom of the cage to create a 2-inch-high layer of bedding, which allows the hamster to burrow and nest.

    • 4

Place a cardboard tube left over from the paper towels in the cage for the hamster to use as a tunnel to hide and run through.

    • 5

Place the hamster back in the cage. Observe the hamster to see if it is acclimating to its new bedding.
