How to Earn a Hamster's Trust

Hamsters are often friendly, affectionate pets, if handled properly. A hamster might come over to see you every time you pass the cage and climb onto your hand so you can let it out. However they can be nervous and occasionally bite, especially if you acquired an older hamster. Any hamster needs time to settle in to a new home before you begin stroking and handling your pet. To earn your pet's trust, take your time and be patient. Supervise young children around the animal.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the cage before you collect the hamster. Add bedding, food, a wheel, a nest box and a water bottle. Having a ready-made home makes the animal feel more secure, especially if you use the same type of food and bedding as the hamster had before.

    • 2

Cover the cage with a light cotton sheet for a couple of days. This provides additional security.

    • 3

Let your hamster settle in to its cage for a couple of days before you approach it for the first time. Place the cage in a quiet room and do not let small children try to play with the animal.

    • 4

Remove the sheet and spend time near the cage daily for another couple of days, only opening it to feed the hamster. This lets the hamster become used to your presence and scent.

    • 5

Place your hand in the cage when the hamster is awake and allow it to approach you. Offering a food treat, such as a sunflower seed, may help.

    • 6

Pick the hamster up gently with both hands when it has become accustomed to you. Support the body and don't squeeze. Place the hamster back in the cage after a few minutes. You can increase the time gradually.
