How to Lure a Hamster Out

An escaped hamster in the house can be difficult to find and catch. The animal's small size enables it to hide under furniture and fit through small holes. If your hamster has escaped its cage, search your home thoroughly. If you are unable to find the hamster, you can tempt it from its hiding place with certain foods. Keep in mind that hamsters are nocturnal animals and will generally sleep during the day. If your hamster has found a place to sleep during the day, you may be able to tempt it out during the night when the animal is at its most active.

Instructions

Check your house for holes in the walls or floors that your hamster could crawl through. Look for signs that your hamster has been there, such as gnawing or droppings left around the entrance of the hole. Put your ear to the hole to listen for sounds that your hamster would make.

Place a deep pan on the floor not far from the hole. If you found no hole, place the pan in the area where you think the hamster may be.

    • 3

Arrange a pile of magazines to form steps up to the top of the dish.

    • 4

Place food in the bottom of the pan. Use food that has a pungent smell, such as scrambled egg or fresh vegetables, to attract the hamster. Place small pieces of carrot, corn, or your hamster's favorite treats along the magazine stairway you have set up to tempt the hamster.

Check the pan regularly to see if the hamster is trapped inside. Ensure that you provide the hamster with plenty of water when you find it, as it may be dehydrated.
