Things You'll Need
- Glass or plastic aquarium
- Sturdy pedestal or shelf
- Cat deterrents
- Spray bottle
- Cold water
Instructions
House the hamster inside of a glass or plastic aquarium instead of a cage. This will ensure that the kitten has less access to the hamster than if it was in a traditional wire cage. Cover the top of the aquarium with a screen to keep the hamster in, and the kitten out.
Set the aquarium on top of a shelf or study pedestal that is out of the reach of the kitten. Pay attention that the shelving or pedestal can support the weight of the aquarium.
Install cat deterrents on the edge of the shelving or around the column of the pedestal. For instance, cover the edge of the shelf or the column with double sided tape. The cat will become irritated when it comes in contact with the tape and will stay away.
Fill a spray bottle with cold water and place it near the aquarium. When the kitten approaches the aquarium, spray in on the backside or near the face with the water. The cat will begin to associate the unwanted squirt of water with approaching the aquarium. Avoid squirting the kitten directly in the face as can lead to an aggressive response.
