How to Clean a Long-Haired Hamster

Long-haired hamsters are also known as "teddy bears." These small rodents need regular and proper care; that includes keeping their hair in good condition. Keeping a long-haired hamster's hair clean is really a matter of keeping its cage clean; however, occasional brushing keeps the hair from getting matted. Although long-haired hamsters rarely need a bath, it's important to bathe them if the cage has not been cleaned in a long time.

Instructions

Clean the cage daily by removing droppings and uneaten food.

Clean the cage thoroughly once a week. Wash the bottom of the cage with soap and water, dry it and replace the bedding. Use paper bedding instead of shavings, which tend to get tangled in a teddy bear hamster's hair.

Gently brush your hamster with a small brush every three to four days. Hold your hamster in one hand and brush it with the other, making sure you get both its top coat and underbelly. Several brush strokes are all that's needed to keep the hair in good condition.
