How to Feed Hamsters Peanut Butter

Hamsters enjoy a range of seeds, nuts and green vegetables in addition to their normal feed. Although hamsters can eat human food, it is important that it be given to them sparingly to avoid gastrointestinal problems, diarrhea and liver issues. Be aware of what foods your hamster cannot eat, and use caution with sticky foods hamsters enjoy, such as peanut butter and honey. The sticky nature of peanut butter can cause it to get stuck in your hamster's cheek pouches and eventually become impacted, a health problem only a veterinarian can remedy. Feed your hamster exceptionally small amounts of peanut butter infrequently to avoid potentially serious health issues.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour a bit of hamster food that contains sunflower seeds on a clean surface. Pick out as many of the sunflower seeds as possible, then place the remaining food in your hamster's dish.

    • 2

Dip the very ends of the sunflower seeds in peanut butter -- use very small dabs. Do not coat entire seeds in peanut butter or join several seeds together in a glob of the spread. Consider interspersing plain sunflower seeds with the peanut butter seeds as well to avoid feeding your hamster too much peanut butter at one time.

    • 3

Place the seeds on top of your hamster's food dish and let it enjoy.

    • 4

Feed your hamster peanut butter only once a month to avoid its cheek pouches from becoming impacted.
