How to Give Water to a Hamster

Hamsters need constant access to water to avoid dehydration. Though many mammals drink from bowls, hamsters thrive when they are able to drink small droplets of water. Hamster water bottles are ideal for this purpose and are easy to use.

      Choose a hamster water bottle. They can be purchased at most pet stores. The drinking tube contains small metal balls that prevent water from leaking. High-quality water bottles are made of glass or thick plastic to prevent the hamster from chewing through them.

      Check the water bottle for leaks to ensure that it will not quickly run out of water and subject your hamster to dehydration. Leaky water bottles can also encourage mold growth. To test for leaks, fill the bottle with water and then press on the ball at the end of the drinking tube. A drop of water should come out, but the water should not come out in a stream or continue to drip.

      Affix the water bottle to the cage. Many water bottles come with wires. Hook one end of the wire to the bars of the cage, go around the bottle, and hook the other end to the cage on the other side of the bottle. If the bottle did not come with a wire, use a twist tie.
