How to Get Rid of a Hamster

Hamsters are small animals, similar to mice and rats, that can be kept as pets. They're small and cute -- and come with big responsibilities. Kids love to watch them run on their exercise wheels, stuff their cheeks with food, and cover miles of carpet in an exercise ball. But what happens when your child gets bored or decides that the responsibility was too much? Follow these suggestions for getting rid of an unwanted hamster.

Instructions

Place an ad in your newspaper or on an online forum such as Craigslist. You can charge for the hamster or give it away for free, as well as all the equipment (cage, water bottle, exercise ball, etc.). Charging a small fee or giving it away for free may increase your chances of a faster adoption.

    • 2

Post an ad on public boards. You can find these boards in grocery stores, banks and other places that receive large amounts of traffic. You may also be able to post an ad at local veterinary offices and pet stores.

    • 3

Ask a relative or friend to take the hamster. Your neighbors, particularly if they have children, may be interested in having a new pet. Co-workers may be interested as well, so ask around the office.

    • 4

Sell or give it back to the store you bought it from. Explain that your child no longer wants the hamster. Depending on their policy, you may get your money back. Most likely you will not receive a refund for any equipment if it has been used.

Hamsters are a great pet for classrooms.

Donate the hamster to a school. Many classrooms enjoy having small animals to care for. Call and ask the school's administration to see if they would be interested.
