How to Transfer Baby Hamsters to a Cage

Baby hamsters need to be left with their mother for the first three to four weeks of their lives. Once they are eating and drinking on their own, they can be transferred to a cage. Females and males should be separated into two cages to prevent them from breeding. The cages should be large enough for the hamsters to have room to play, and should be placed away from a draft in a warm area.

If you are transferring baby hamsters purchased from a pet store, the instructions are the same.

Prepare the cages with food bowls, water bottles and bedding material.

Carefully take one baby hamster out of the mother hamster's cage and put it in the appropriate cage --- male or female. Repeat until all are transferred. If you brought the hamsters home from the pet store, you can place the box inside the cage and open it to let them out, or you can transfer them by hand.

Secure doors and openings tightly on all cages.
