How to Disinfect Hamster Equipment

Hamsters originated from Syria and are considered an agricultural pest in the wild. Hamsters first arrived in America in the early 20th century. Because of their friendly demeanor and relative lack of disease, hamsters are often sought after as pets. Hamsters are naturally well-groomed animals and require a well cared for habitat. Disinfecting a hamster cage can kill disease-causing bacteria and fungus, which will help keep your pet hamster healthy and happy.

Measure the veterinary disinfectant according to the manufacturer's instructions, and pour it into the spray bottle. DuPont's Virkon website states that 10 g of Virkon powder should be used for every liter of water.

    • 2

Add water to the spray bottle following the product's measurement directions, and mix thoroughly with the disinfectant by shaking or stirring.

    • 3

Lay a large towel or rag on a table or other flat surface, then place the hamster equipment to be disinfected on top of it.

    • 4

Spray the hamster equipment liberally and evenly with the veterinary disinfectant. Spray inside and outside the equipment for maximum disinfection.

    • 5

Allow the hamster equipment to air dry while laying on the towel. Once the equipment is completely dry, it will be ready for use.
