How to Mate Winter White Dwarf Hamsters

Winter white dwarf hamsters make great pets. These tiny and adorable creatures are high in energy and can be easily trained. They are very small and require much less cage space than a teddy bear hamster or guinea pig. Winter white dwarf hamsters can camouflage themselves in the wild to hide from attacking animals. You can successfully breed your pets at home if you follow a few simple steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a male and female hamster together in a cage with bedding, water and food. This should be a third cage and not the normal cage where either the male or female winter white hamster is kept on a normal basis.

    • 2

Wait for nightfall. Winter white dwarf hamsters are nocturnal creatures and will most likely not reproduce during the day. Their peak of sexual maturity is around 2 to 3 months old; attempt the breeding process around this time.

    • 3

Watch your hamsters and look for signs that the female is ready for the male to make a move. Female hamsters are in heat at the end of every four days. The female hamster will stand very still with her tail raised and her back arched. This will signal the male to approach her. The actual mating process takes about 20 minutes.

    • 4

Return your hamsters to their original cages. It is okay to have other females in the pregnant hamster's cage as they can help tend to the young. Do not leave any males in the cage with the pregnant hamster.

    • 5

Prepare for the baby winter white dwarf hamsters to arrive around 18 days later. Make sure to keep the cage filled with extra protein rich food such as bread drenched in milk. This extra protein will benefit both the mother and her young.

    • 6

Leave the cage alone for the first two weeks. Even if you normally clean your pet's cage once a week, let it stay a little longer. The adult hamsters will get scared that you are trying to hurt the babies if you disturb the cage.

    • 7

Remove the newborn male hamsters from the cage when they are 4 weeks old to prevent any accidental breeding.
