Commercially Prepared Diets
-
A good commercial diet will include vegetable, grains and greens. Pellets are the most common form of food. Others are whole grains mixed with dehydrated vegetables and dried greens. Some feeds are a mixture of both. Most include added vitamins and minerals.
Supplimental Foods
-
The every day diet is often supplemented with fresh greens and vegetables. However, in the wild, these foods are not often available in quantities to the mountain dwelling hamsters and can easily cause diarrhea, sometimes, called "wet tail." Take extreme caution when feeding fresh foods, as wet tail can be fatal.
Additional Eatables
-
In addition to fresh vegetables, teddy bear hamsters also eat hard-boiled eggs, shells included. Fish oil served once a week is a good vitamin D supplement and a pinch of yeast once a week can add extra vitamin B. Giving a hamster wood to gnaw on also helps keep their teeth trimmed and clean.
