Teddy Bear Hamster Behavior

Teddy bear hamsters make good pets for busy people because they are generally healthy, they do not need much space and their maintenance needs are low. There are some general teddy bear hamster behavioral traits that you can look out for.
  1. One Per Cage

    • Teddy bear hamsters are solitary creatures and are very territorial. They do not like to share housing or food, so if two hamsters are placed in the same cage they will fight and hurt one another.

    Chewing

    • Hamsterific notes that a bored hamster will chew on the metal bars of its cage, which can eventually cause tooth and even brain damage. Hamsters need to be supplied with wooden chews, toys or dog biscuits to chew on.

    Nocturnal

    • Hamsters are nocturnal, according to Petco. This means that they will sleep during the daytime and wake up after the sun goes down.

    Handling

    • Hamsters have a tendency to bite if they are awoken from sleep or startled by their owner. The Pet Doc website suggests handling the animal in the early evening when it is awake.

    Tunneling

    • According to the Dog Breed Info website, hamsters enjoy crawling through empty cans, boxes with more than one opening, and plastic tubes.
