How to Make Hamster Toys & Treats

Store-bought hamster toys and treats are a good choice, but if you are on a tight budget or like to make things, try homemade toys and treats. Hamsters enjoy a varied diet. Feed your hamster a specially formulated hamster mix, but provide treats to help her get all the nutrients she needs. Hamsters are energetic creatures. Provide your hamster with toys that keep her busy; this keeps your hamster from becoming bored. Hamsters do well with a maze, since they like to burrow and store food.

A maze with a tube run is easy to make. Supervise children when cutting and gluing the cardboard. Cut the cardboard box into a flat base with 3-inch high walls. Cut a 2 1/2-inch opening in one end of the base for an entrance. Cut strips of cardboard to the same height as the base walls. Place them into the base to form a maze (choose an arrangement that you like) and secure them with glue. Glue the paper towel roll tightly to the opening of the base to form a tube entrance.

Drill the holes before you let your child finish this easy to make swing toy. Drill two holes through the top of the cardboard roll. Thread the shoelace through the holes and tie it in a secure knot. Hang the swing in your hamster's cage by pulling the free end of the shoelace through the top of the cage and tying it in a secure knot.
