How to Introduce a Female Hamster to a Male Hamster

Fluffy and furry, hamsters are among the most popular "pocket pets" to have. Great for children, these little balls of fur are easy to care for and fun to hold. Hamsters typically like the company of other hamsters. However, there are instances when hamsters do not get along and should only have supervised visits---this is often the case with males and females. In addition, most opposite-sexed hamsters are only introduced to one another for breeding purposes and then are separated. If you plan on introducing your female hamster to your male, do so in a slow, supervised process.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a cage that comes with dividers, or obtain dividers that will fit inside the cage. Clear partitions or those that have holes or spaces in them typically work best.

    • 2

Place the male hamster on one side of the partition and the female on the other. Allow them to look at and sniff one another. If they begin to show aggressive behavior, wait a bit until it stops. However, if they are constantly trying to attack each other through the divider, you may want to reconsider your choice to introduce them.

Remove the partition and supervise their interaction. There is a good chance that they may fight and if this occurs, separate them and install the divider again. There is also an extremely high chance that they will mate if together. If you do not wish to have hamster babies, you probably shouldn't introduce them to each other.
