About Syrian Hamsters

Syrian hamsters were the first species of hamster to be bred first for laboratory animals and then as pets. They are also known as golden hamsters. As their name suggests, they are originally from Syria.

    • Syrian hamsters are the largest pet hamster species, averaging 4 to 7 inches (10 to 17 cm) long and weighing 5 to 7 oz. (140 to 200 grams) according to veterinarian Sharon Vanderlip.

    Behavior

    • Unlike some dwarf hamster species, such as the Roborovski hamster, Syrians are not sociable and prefer to live by themselves, according to the Hamsterific website.

    Types

    • The four types of hamsters are classified by how much hair they have. The most common type is the shorthair, followed by the longhair (or teddy bear hamster) the rex (with tightly curled hair) and the bald hamster.

    History

    • The first hamsters captured for laboratory use was in 1930. By 1945, Syrian hamsters reached the British pet market and gradually became a popular pet all around the world.

    Fun Facts

    • Female Syrian hamsters are usually larger than males. They also have the shortest gestation period of any mammal--a mere 16 to 18 days.
