Information on Panda Hamsters

A descendant of the traditional Syrian hamster, the Panda Bear hamster is becoming one of the more popular hamster breeds in the United States. It is named as such due to its resemblance to the panda bear.
  1. Identification

    • The most distinguishing feature of the Panda Bear hamster is its coat markings: a black head with a white and black body.

    Features

    • Like the Syrian variety, Panda Bear hamsters can live up to three years. They prefer to live alone and are very clean, according to GotPetsOnline.com.

    Habitat

    • Panda hamsters must be housed in a large cage filled with many toys and hideaway houses to keep them mentally stimulated. The habitat must include an exercise wheel and constant access to water.

    Considerations

    • Like most hamster breeds, panda hamsters are nocturnal and will be most active overnight. They are also susceptible to drafts, so placement of the cage should be considered carefully.

    Warning

    • Cedar shavings used as bedding can cause skin irritation or severe respiratory complications in panda hamsters. Recycled newspaper bedding is recommended.
