Can Teddy Hamsters Eat Eggs?

Hamsters thrive on a diet rich in fresh fruits, vegetables and seeds. While teddy hamsters are capable of digesting cooked eggs, they derive little nutritional benefit from them and should only eat eggs occasionally.
  1. Nutrition

    • Eggs are high in fat and protein. While teddy hamsters need these macronutrients in small amounts, a plant-based diet will usually address this modest nutritional need.

    Safety

    • Raw or undercooked eggs can harbor pathogens such as salmonella, which can be fatal for hamsters.

    Effects

    • Some teddy hamsters experience mild gas, indigestion or diarrhea after eating eggs, while others digest them with little trouble. Feed your hamster a small amount to test his digestive tolerance.

    Preparation

    • Teddy hamsters enjoy scrambled or boiled eggs. Do not add any salt, oil or seasonings, as these can upset a hamster's digestion.

    Egg Shells

    • Many teddy hamsters enjoy eating eggshells, which provide much-needed dietary calcium. Eggshells also can help to trim and sharpen a hamster's teeth.
