Things You'll Need
- Hamster bedding
- Heater (optional)
Instructions
Depending on what situation your hamster is in, you'll have to make an educated guess as to how much warming she'll need. If it's winter in Alaska, you'll need to offer more warmth to keep the hamster at its ideal conditions. If it's summer in Bermuda, you'll probably be fine with just hamster bedding.
Buy hamster bedding. Pet stores sell shredded materials such as cotton and wood chips, which can be used to keep your hamster warm. Put the materials in the cage. If you need a heater, position it close enough to the cage as to keep the hamster warm. Depending on the size of the cage, you might need more or less bedding. Because hamsters produce waste, as do most little critters, you should definitely remember that you will have to clean the bedding you use to warm the hamster. The application of the warmth-giving material is a delicate balance between too much, because it will soil quickly, and too little, in which case there aren't enough warming materials to keep the hamster warm.
After adding heat-giving materials, keep your hamster under close observation for a day or two, and make an educated guess as to whether he's still cold. If he still seems cold, add more bedding and move the portable heater closer to the cage. If the hamster appears to be warm, then you're all set.
