Daily Food
-
Your hamster will need to be fed daily with pellet food specifically made for hamsters. This food is available in pet stores and grocery stores. You can also supplement your hamster's diet with certain fruits, vegetables and nuts. It is important, however, that you give these to your hamster in very small amounts and avoid giving too much of one type of food. A balanced diet is very important. Some foods that you can give to your hamster include shelled almonds, brazil nuts, acorns, bread, cheese, boiled egg, apples, bananas, boiled potato, cooked fish, peanuts, raisins, prunes, celery and lettuce. Keep in mind that if you give your hamster anything boiled or cooked, it must be at room temperature. All food must be unseasoned (no table scraps).
What Not to Give Your Hamster
-
Here are a few things that you should never feed to your hamster: garlic, chocolate or anything sweet, onions, raw kidney beans, citrus fruits (lemons, oranges, grapefruits), and any type of food not made just for hamsters. Keep in mind that this is not an exhaustive list. When deciding on whether to give a different type of food, just try to use common sense based on the information provided. If you have a feeling that it may not be a good thing to give, don't.
Water
-
Although hamsters do not usually drink a lot of water, they will dehydrate quickly if they run out. Give your hamster fresh water everyday. The water must be chlorine free, so it may be necessary to give your hamster purified water only. Pet stores sell vitamin drops which can be added to the water to make sure your hamster is getting all of the nutrients it needs.
