Hideaways and Houses
-
Cardboard boxes of all shapes and sizes are capable of being converted into homes and hideaways for your hamster. Cereal boxes, for example, are sized well for this purpose. Cut holes of various sizes in all sides of the box, then tape the end of the box closed to create an enclosed space with plenty of entrances. Whenever possible, choose cardboard materials that do not have ink on them, for the safety of your hamster. Food container boxes are generally safe, but other types of boxes may not be.
Play Gyms
-
Hamster play gyms can be created from a variety of different materials. If you have cardboard materials of different types such as paper towel and toilet paper tubes, cardboard boxes, cereal boxes and shoe boxes, you can create a unique play gym in any size or shape that you can imagine. Cut holes into the boxes, fitting the tubes into the holes and taping them in place. You can create a maze or a jungle gym this way, creating plenty of outlets for your hamster to enjoy itself.
Legos
-
Another method of creating something for your hamster to climb on is to use Legos or other similar building blocks. Because they are sturdy and come in many different shapes and sizes, the sky is the limit when it comes to building the perfect house, hideaway or jungle gym for your hamster to enjoy. If your hamster begins to chew on any part of your Lego toys, however, they should be removed or replaced.
Chew Toys
-
Hamsters love to chew, which is why many of their commercial toys end up in shreds. What you can do to combat this is to give your hamster plenty of things to chew on. Cut paper and cardboard tubes into small rings that your hamster can carry around and chew on. You can also create cubes and other shapes out of cardboard that your hamster can demolish when his chewing habit runs rampant.

Fun Homemade Hamster Toys
Making your own hamster toys is a great way to provide your hamster with unique entertainment without having to pay for commercial toys. Commercial hamster toys can be pricey, and because half of the fun for your hamster lies in destroying them, it is cost-effective to make your own hamster toys instead.
