How Often Should You Clean Hamster Cage?

Hamsters groom themselves many times a day and can often be seen wiping down their faces. But they have to rely on their owner to keep their habitat clean. Regular maintenance goes a long way toward ensuring your hamster's optimal health. Illnesses, including respiratory problems, can be avoided by maintaining a clean, dry cage.
  1. Time Frame

    • Clean the litter daily to remove areas made wet by urination. Clean the entire cage, including all of its contents, once a week to remove additional soiled bedding and stale food.

    Warning

    • Most harsh household cleaning products are poisonous to hamsters. Warm water and a mild soap, such as dish-washing liquid, works best.

    Fun Fact

    • Hamsters are hoarders, storing food in their cheek pouches and distributing it around their habitat. Just because you can't see rotting food doesn't mean it's not there.

    Expert Insight

    • Hamsters are nocturnal and don't like being disturbed during their daytime sleeping hours. According to the Humane Society of the United States, cleaning, feeding and handling should take place in the late afternoon or evening.

    Considerations

    • Make sure your hamster is kept in a safe spot, away from any drafts and wires, while cleaning the cage. Exercise balls or a smaller pet carrier are good options.
