How to Hold a Hamster

Hamsters are fragile, quick, and have sharp teeth, so picking them up and holding them should be done with care. There are several ways you can pick up and hold a hamster. Read on to learn how.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hands before picking up or holding your hamster to get rid of any food scent that may cause it to bite.

    • 2

Let your hamster see and smell your hands before picking it up.

    • 3

Hold a jar or container in the cage and let your hamster climb into it. This is the best method for new hamsters and inexperienced handlers.

    • 4

Put one hand under your hamster and the other hand on top of it to lift it, or cup your hands together and scoop them under the hamster.

    • 5

Pick up the hamster by the skin on the back of its neck. This method is controversial since some experts say it can harm the hamster. If your hamster seems uncomfortable, do not use this method.

    • 6

Cup your hands around your hamster, leaving a hole for it to poke its head through. Don't hold the hamster too tightly; leave plenty of space between your hands.

    • 7

Lift your hamster with one hand by coiling your fingers around the hamster and lifting. This is best for hamsters who are familiar with being handled, and for experienced hamster handlers. The hamster should only be carried like this for short distances.
