How to Make a Hamster Wheel Out of Simple Material

Your hamster is an active little creature, with lots of energy to burn. A homemade hamster wheel, attached to her cage, will provide it the opportunity to self-propel a cylinder to get exercise. You might spend a small fortune on toys for your hamster's cage, or you can create your own using a few items easily located at your local hardware and discount stores. A deep saucer mimics the shape of commercially available hamster cages, allowing you to create your own wheel for a fraction of the price.

Things You'll Need

  • Drill
  • Flat-bottomed plastic saucer (circular) with a minimum 2-inch side
  • 1 bolt
  • 1 wing nut
  • 1 or 2 washers

Instructions

    • 1

Drill a hole in the center of the saucer, large enough to fit the bolt.

    • 2

Place a washer on the bolt and then place the bolt through the hole you made in the saucer.

    • 3

Open the door to the hamster cage. Holding the bolt in place, reach into the cage and place the saucer against the back wall.

    • 4

Position the bolt end so that it fits through the bars.

    • 5

Hold the plate in place with one hand and reach around the cage with the other to place a washer on the end of the bolt.

    • 6

Secure the bolt in place using a wing nut.
