How to Build Your Own Expandable Hamster Habitat

If you have a hamster, you need a habitat that your pet can call home. While a single hamster cage can certainly do the trick and keep your hamster out of the rest of your house, an expandable hamster habitat can give your furry friend more room to move around. An expandable habitat also gives you the opportunity to be creative in the construction of your hamster's home.

Instructions

Determine where you want to set up your hamster habitat, and clear the area of other items. Draw out the desired layout of your new hamster home on paper to get a feel for exactly how much space you'll need where.

    • 2

Set up hamster cages within your designated area, connecting them together with tubing. Design your hamster habitat like you might design your own home. Consider having a rec room full of wheels where your hamster can play, as well as a bedroom full of soft bedding your hamster can nap in. Set up slides as the entrance into some rooms. Hamsters love chewing on things. Create cardboard statues and boxes for your habitat that your hamster can get its teeth into.

Fill your cages with toys and activities for your hamster. Hamster wheels are an old favorite, but slides and toys can also spice up an otherwise mundane room. Spread toys out over different cages to encourage your hamster to move around throughout the habitat. You will also want to include lots of bedding for your hamster to cuddle in, and things for it to chew on.

Put your hamster in its new habitat and watch it go. Over time you may want to reorganize the layout of your habitat so your hamster can use it better or to keep it interesting.
