How to Make a Hamster Water Bottle at Home

Hamsters enjoy the security and comfort of their own home, and unlike other pets, such as dogs, do not require a great deal of human interaction. Ensuring they have a daily supply of fresh and clean water is vital. Although hamster water bottles are available to buy in most pet stores, if you have a few basic materials you can also make your own temporary water bottle for your hamster to enjoy.

Things You'll Need

  • 500 ml plastic water or soda bottle
  • Straw
  • Marker
  • Ruler

Clean the bottle thoroughly and remove any labels. Using the ruler, make a line with the marker on the bottle at every centimeter. This will indicate how much your hamster is drinking. If you notice the water isn't going down, or moving very slowly, your water bottle may need replacing, or there may be a health concern with your hamster.

Cut the straw in half and keep the bendy part. Remove the lid from the bottle, and make a hole in the lid using the hammer and nail. Once you have made a hole, hammer the nail out and push the straw through the hole. The hole should be slightly smaller than the straw to hold the liquid.

Fill the bottle with cold water and close the lid. Drink a little water using the straw to ensure the water flows easily. Tie the bottle to the hamster cage with the string. The bottle should be attached so the straw is about two inches from the cage floor so the hamster can easily reach the straw. Make sure the straw doesn't touch the floor or any hamster furniture, as this will help prevent any leaks.
