Things You'll Need
- Large tub
- Drill
- Bedding material
- Water bottle
- Food dish
- Wheel
Instructions
Set up the tub. The tub you use should be at least 12 inches long by 8 inches wide by 8 inches tall, and should come with a lid. You can use see-through or opaque plastic. Drill three or four small holes in the sides of the tub, about two inches from the top edge. These will help provide airflow.
Create a proper lid. Take the lid that came with the tub and drill six rows of holes in it, with four holes per row. Space them out equally across the length of the lid. Like the holes in the sides of the tub, these will help create proper airflow for the hamsters. Make sure the lid snaps on tight to the tub when closed. If it is loose or doesn't snap on both ends, you need to obtain separate cage locks to make sure it is secure when closed.
Put in furnishings and toys. Lay down 1 1/2 inches of bedding on the floor of the cage. Attach a water bottle with a suction cup holder to one side. Provide an exercise wheel, hide boxes, tunnels and any other toys you can think of to keep your hamster active. Also include a food dish.
