How to Get Your Hamster to Like Being Held

Hamsters are very popular pets because they are easy to care for, fun to watch and not expensive to keep. Although hamsters are prey animals, they are not as nervous around humans as many other small animals are. A hamster will quickly learn to feel comfortable around its owner and even enjoy being held if it is handled carefully.

Instructions

Allow the hamster to get to know you before you attempt to pick it up. Show the hamster that you are not a threat by moving slowly. Offer it treats, such as apples, carrots and nuts, and speak to it so that it will start to associate your smell and voice with good things.

Start out slowly. The first time that you pick up the hamster, hold it only for a minute or two. Gradually start to hold the hamster for longer periods of time.

    • 3

Pick up the hamster with both hands by cupping one hand underneath its hind legs and one hand underneath its chest, or hold it in one hand and support it against your chest. Hold the hamster both gently and firmly.

Continue to interact with the hamster so that it remains used to your voice, touch and smell. Stroke it and give it treats, and allow it to explore a safe environment outside of its cage every day.
