Do honeybees nest in the ground?

Honeybees generally don't nest in the ground like bumblebees. They form colonies and usually prefer hollow spaces, crevices, tree barks, cavities in rocks, logs, or any enclosed and protected environments above ground for building their hives.

While it's rare to find honeybees nesting entirely underground, sometimes swarms might seek temporary shelter or may rest within shallow burrows, especially during transitional phases if they haven't found a proper location to establish their permanent colony. However, such cases do not constitute actual underground nesting behaviors for honeybees like bumblebees.
