How to Hold a Newt

Newts are amphibians related to salamanders. They spend the majority of their time in the water. Popular as pets, newts are entertaining to watch and quite active for a cold-blooded animal. While it is not true that you can never handle your newt, it is best to do so as little as possible. Newts have very delicate skin, which is easily damaged. When you do hold your amphibious friend, set it back in its tank after five minutes or so to avoid drying its skin.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before holding your newt. Be sure to rinse all traces of soap from your hands. Newts skin is very sensitive, and salt from your sweat can harm your pet's health.

    • 2

Hold your newt in wet hands. This will help keep its skin from drying out.

    • 3

Grip your newt securely, without squeezing too hard. The newt might wriggle or try to escape, and you can easily drop the slippery animal.

    • 4

Lift your newt by placing your hand right behind its head and supporting the rest of the body with your other hand. Holding behind the head will prevent the newt from being able to turn and bite.

    • 5

Avoid handling your newt if you have any cuts or sores on your hands. Newts produce toxins that can cause irritation if absorbed through an open wound.
