How to Feed Salamander Larvae

Salamander larvae is credited by the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory for helping to control the mosquito population. While a mosquito is one source of food for the larvae, they tend to feed on insects that live in the water. As the salamander grows up, it loses its gills and seeks out food on land. At this stage, the salamander is also prey and is eaten by ducks and other wild animals.

Instructions

    • 1

Place enough zooplankton in the water for which the larvae can easily eat. Salamander larvae are slow, so a lot of zooplankton will be needed for the salamander to be able to catch any.

    • 2

Place some leaves in the water and make it sink by puncturing it and then pushing it into the water. Salamander larvae feed under these leaves during the day.

    • 3

Place small insects into the cage as the larvae grows. They will also eat tadpoles and larvae. Around this time, usually six months, the larvae will lose their gills and leave the pond.
