How to Grow Silkworms for a Hobby

Silkworms are interesting insects that make easy pets. They are often kept by teachers as classroom pets, by reptile owners for food, or by those that just find them fascinating. Silkworms are actually the larvae of an Asian moth and there are many different species. They all create a silky web that can be spun into clothing. With just a few items and plenty of food you can easily add silkworms to your collection of unusual pets.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a source for your silkworms. There are many breeders that sell their silkworms over the internet.

    • 2

Use a plastic container for housing. Most any plastic container with or without a lid will work just fine.

    • 3

Feed them Mulberry Leaves. They are picky eaters and will only eat Mulberry Leaves without fail. They should be given fresh leaves 2 -- 3 times a day if you do not have a lid. They can be given fresh leaves once a day if you do have a lid.

Remove old leaves daily and droppings weekly. This is to prevent mold growth which will kill your silkworms.
